Why semiconductors, and why now
India is building its first generation of semiconductor plants: wafer fabs, and assembly, test, marking and packaging (ATMP and OSAT) facilities. Every one of these plants needs operators, technicians, engineers and supervisors who understand cleanroom discipline, precision equipment and quality systems. Few people in India have done this work before, which means candidates who prepare now can join at the start of a new industry.
Semiconductor manufacturing is also different from many factory jobs. Processes are measured in microns and nanometres, equipment is highly automated, and quality is everything. The work rewards people who are careful, curious and willing to keep learning.
Roles by qualification
ITI and diploma
Most plants will need large numbers of production operators and technicians. ITI and diploma holders in electronics, electrical, mechanical, mechatronics and instrumentation are a natural fit for roles such as OSAT production operator, assembly technician, packaging technician, test technician, equipment technician and cleanroom technician. These roles run and maintain the equipment that assembles and tests chips.
BSc and MSc
Science graduates in physics, chemistry and electronics can move into technician, metrology, quality and lab roles, and with experience into process and failure analysis work.
BE, BTech and above
Engineering graduates can join as process, equipment, test, quality, reliability, yield or maintenance engineers, and in fabs as photolithography, etch, thin film, CMP or metrology engineers. Facilities and EHS engineers keep the plant's utilities and safety systems running. Electronics and VLSI graduates can also target design roles such as RTL design, verification, physical design and DFT.

How careers progress
Nirji uses a four-level Workforce Architecture for every role. At L1 you work under supervision; at L2 you work independently; at L3 you handle advanced tasks and troubleshooting; and at L4 you are an expert who coaches others. Many technicians grow into senior technician, engineer or supervisor roles as they move up these levels. Read more about the Workforce Architecture.
How to prepare
- Learn the basics of the process. Understand how a chip is made, from wafer to packaged product. Our glossary is a good start.
- Build hands-on habits. Precision measurement, reading drawings and procedures, basic electrical and mechanical maintenance, and working safely all transfer directly to the line.
- Get comfortable with quality tools. Checklists, SPC charts and root-cause methods are part of daily life in a semiconductor plant.
- Consider a workforce programme. Nirji workforce programmes are designed around specific roles and lead to Nirji Ready assessment.
- Be open to shifts and relocation. Plants run around the clock and are located in specific states, so flexibility widens your options.
